Taiwan seems surreal to me at times. The former president is in jail after having stolen a lot of state assets (wife and he have confessed recently a part of the illegal money transfers to Switzerland), he is shown on TV where is recently has developed a silly "duck walk" as an exercise in the jailhouse park. His wife who seemingly did not have her hair done for quite a while playing the martyr, sitting in her wheelchair and making a cry face to the camera, but wearing a huge diamond ring on her finger. Her daughter being chased on the streets by Taiwanese press mobs, even in New York City, always red-eyed, shouting at the press and seeming like a nuke before the explosion. The daily chubby guy always at lunch time on TV accusing the family of the ex-president of the crimes we all know about, a comical look in his eyes as if he doesn't take the whole thing serious. One time someone really took away his hair piece, he obviously is bald beneath it. Everybody chasing him, having the scalp in his hand.
Meanwhile we have the new president Ma ("Horse" in English) selling out the country to China, he avoids even calling it "Taiwan" and calls it a region of China instead. But the old president wasn't any better. Taiwan is fun, best is to have a good laugh and not take things too serious.
Surely, Peking style capitalistic-communism with authoritarian rule will be funny somehow as well...
