I randomly picked two things to talk about on your post of I HATE TAIWAN.

You were complaining:

I hate Taiwan for its careless and irresponsible treatment of dogs.

do not use slippery tiles as sidewalk pavement.

I am sure there are many other things that you didn’t describe in your list of examples that made you HATE Taiwan, and I understand your feeling. But, if you live in another country other than Taiwan (like me in Greece) these same things that irate you may also happen. Here the cats and dogs don’t get proper treatment either, at least not like in Germany. And our downstairs tiles leading to the entrance door were the slippery kind that should not be used by the builder, but the builder used it because they were the left-overs from his other construction’s bathrooms nearby (I found out later from my neighbor who bought an apartment from this other construction). Once a neighbor in my building slipped, fell down and broke her arm, so all of us in the building had to hold a meeting and decide to replace the tiles downstairs even though our building was quite new at that time. The sidewalks had to be opened up several times for burying gas pipelines, telecomm cables, etc. within short period of time, they just couldn’t coordinate to dig the sidewalk once and finish multiple tasks.

Coming from a more organized society like Germany, there will be many things that you HATE, not specifically because you live in Taiwan, but because Taiwan is one in the list of those countries that are less organized. But comparatively, Taiwan has made a relatively fast attempt to be in-line with the standards set by western countries. Although in Taiwan, there still are rooms for improvement. You should be more positive and patient in trying to influence the people and the society there around you.

From time to time these things that make you down will make you feel even more homesick. And if this continues to an extent that you couldn’t stand anymore, then perhaps it’s a good to come home to Germany for a change and for a “re-charge of battery”.

You are quite honest to discuss your feelings, but to vent your anger by CURSES including to let China annex Taiwan…and I am sure you know if China were to annex Taiwan, you will see a society even more careless for your pets, even less freedom, even more things you can pick on to discuss…

So, the best is to deal with your living environment in a positive and active way and start from your community first, and try to change people’s minds and actions. Like this guy who has this blog http://en.wildatheart.org.tw/.

With sincere words of encouragement,

Thanks. You are right. However I have given up the "influence your environment" long ago like most long-termers here. People are very self-confident here, they claim to have 5000 years of culture and when you want to teach them something, they just smile and say "you don't understand Taiwanese culture".

But compared to most places of the world, Taiwan is a good place. I used to like it before I lived here. I just came to the conclusion it's time to go home soon. They like noise, crowds, pollution [I actually think they identify it with progress] and I don't. So time to go.

Compared to mainland China it's sure paradise...

It's 5000 years since 1949, that became clear I hope :-)
